Forecasting Report on 2010 Fall Winter

Marc Jacobs is a fashion designer posses the characteristics of ironic, romantic, extreme and out-going. When Jacobs applies colors, Black, Grey and White will be the domain. As I have analysed the reason behind in the previous post, it is due to the influence of Martin Margiela and Rei Kawakubo. Besides, Jacobs always play with the opposite and has all the literal references to past fashions verged on re-creation, rather than the renewal Also, Jacobs will still reference to his past collection in Perry Ellis.

In my opinion, there are some important global events which may affect the fashion trends in 2010, which are, Financial Tsunami; Global Warming; Environmental Friendly and; The new president Obama.

Moreover, after the questionaire research, I have found that people feel worried towards Financial Tsunami and the color representing is grey; they also feel anger, scared and worried towards Global Warming and the color representing is red; color representing the president, Obama is blue.

However, Jacobs is a designer always plays the opposite with others, so Jacobs will reacts as feel Happy towards Financial Tsunami and the color representing are Red, Yellow, Orange; he will also think of the old days when nature is beautiful concering with Global Warming and the color representing is White, Grey or Green, Yellow; color representing the president, Obama is blue.

And therefore, I would predict the color theme in 2010 Fall Winter as follows:

1) Funfair

In this color family, colors appears in funfair will be chose. And the theme is inspired by Financial Tsunami, as Jacobs will react as happy, and so, colors chose would be RED, ORANGE, YELLOW, BLUE and PURPLE. and of course achromatic color is a must. Moreover, Jacobs may use Achromatic Color Scheme, Triad and Monochromatic Color Scheme within this color family.

2) Nature in the past

In this color family, colors appears in nature will be chose. And the theme is inspired by Global Warming, as Jacobs will normally rethink and memorize the old days, so, colors chose would be colors of nature, which is GREEN, SKYBLUE, YELLOW and RED, and of course achromatic color. Besides, Jacobs may use Achromatic Color Scheme, Analogous Color Scheme and Monochromatic Color Scheme within this color family, which are the color schemes he likes the most.

3) Simplicity, Recycling

In this color family, colors appears in earthtone, ceramics will be chose. And the theme is inspired by Simplicity and Recycling, as Jacobs likes to use pastel color to express simple, and so, colors chose would be pastel colors to project a gentle feeling. Also, Jacobs may use Achromatic Color Scheme, Triad, Analogos Color Scheme and Monochromatic Color Scheme within this color family.

4) Trust, Power

In this color family, colors representing POWER and Trust will be chose which is BLUE. And the theme is inspired by the new president Obama. Since Obama gives us a feeling of trust, and he now is the president of USA, which control the society. Therefore, Blue is being chose. And the color scheme Jacobs will mainly use in this color family are Achromatic Color Scheme and Monochromatic Color Scheme.

This would be the end of my forecasting report on 2010 Fall Winter.
Thank you.

Reflections on this assignment

After completing the assignment, I would say I am no more a layman of fashion. At least, I play well with the color wheel, and I could quickly shout out the color scheme that you are wearing just now. Besides, I am sure that my awareness of color has increased after completing this assignment and the WGSN competition and I am addicted to photo shooting.

Before ITC 3401, the way I comment on others wearing is just a general opinions, "It's nice"; "It's disgusting". But now, I've changed, I would say "Wow, Monochromatic Color Scheme! I think she better gets a pink clutch bag to contrast the whole outfits!". Also, I don't know what to deal with Cosmopolian, VOGUE and ELLE before, but now I really look forward to read it and I find uncomfortable if I don't browse Style.com in a day.

I really hope that I could establish a good taste soon.

Timberlake, Moss, Jacobs Bring Sexy Back to Vogue

In a photo shoot for Vogue, singer Justin Timberlake, super model Kate Moss and fashion designer Marc Jacobs show why they are at the top of their games.

Jacobs on the shoot and Moss: "It could be looking at an old forties Vogue. Or it could be having just seen an art show, or it could be what Kate Moss wore last night at a fabulous party. There's been so much written about her personal style. But it isn't her personal style that interests me, it's her person; it's the life and the spirit."

Jacobs on other models: "Besides having a look or a style, these women have a lifestyle. If Naomi Campbell were very well behaved and always on time, and didn't have her little tantrums, I don't know that she'd still be around and traveling like Elizabeth Taylor with an entourage."

Jacobs' dream: "What I'd like to do is, through rose-colored glasses, to look at New York in the way I remembered it, not the way it really feels right now, because to me it's not the most happy place in the world at the moment. But I know that there's a vitality here, there's an energy, and anybody can be whatever they want to be. The idea of fearless risk-taking, creative, energetic youth and beauty is what the high times of New York are about. We have this gift in fashion -- we can kind of pretend it is that way!"

Floating Heels of the late 1950s

By now, we’re all familiar with the Marc Jacobs “inverted heel” pumps, right? Here’s a little visual aid:

Some have already remarked on the quasi-similarity with the work of famous shoe designer Andre Perugia, who was experimenting with heel-less shoes as early as the 1930s. Perugia is a whole fashion chapter in and by himself, and the similarity is definitely there, but we here at Shoeblog believe we’ve found an even uncannier resemblance in these vintage black pumps, ca. 1958-1960 (unlabeled, American or Italian-made):

Turns out that the desire for novelty in women’s shoes gave birth to this particular design concept, a “floating heel,” made with a cantilevered sole and elevated mid-sole cast from one piece of metal sturdy enough to support the wearer’s weight. The patent belonged to Martin Friedmann (1956). Here’s one more example:

According to Jonathan Waldorf, author of The Seductive Shoe, this was “a short-lived fad” that died ca. 1961.

Well, until Marc Jacobs brought it back in 2008, that is!

Before, I only admire Vivienne Westwood Shoes!!!
and now,,,
I love Marc Jacobs shoes either!!!!

Information Intepretation

Here are some news concerning my predicted theme:

1) Financial Tsunami

It reflects that citizen against the Financial Tsunami with a positive attitude. Which means, in the collection it should be look forward to a better future. For example, Jacobs may encourage people to be happy just like going to an AIA fun fair.

2) Global Warming

Global Warming is worser and worser to the earth. Even RoadShow is broadcasting video about Global Warming. I believe Marc Jacobs is time to arouse people's attention to the Global Warming. In the collection in 2010, Jacobs might used a lot of White and Grey color to express the feeling.

3) Environmental Friendly

Have you notice that the symbol of YAHOO website? It is encouraging people to be environmental friendly.

4) The new USA president---Obama

That's because Obama's managed to inspire one demographic that earlier presidential nominees either couldn't, or wouldn't appeal to: the fashion industry. By the time New York Fashion Week rolled around in September, the election, while not exactly at the forefront of people's minds — hey, there's a Marc Jacobs show to go to! — was a serious influence. Hanging around the fashion pack's necks were entry passes into the Bryant Park tents screaming "Vote Fashion!" and "Fashion Wins".
After finding some news about my theme, I believe I'm on the right track and I'm going to forecast the color trend in 2010, refering to Marc Jacobs' Color applying style.

Monday, 6 April 2009

Research Evaluation

The themes I predicted are based on some global events, and the themes are:
1) Financial Tsunami
2) Global Warming
3) Environmental Friendly
4) The new USA president---Obama

As I'm a typical Hong Kong Teenager, who seldom read news. I may not notice some more important global events that may influence to fashion at 2010. And problem may arise if my diection is wrong, as I will forecast the color trend based on the important global events. In order to prevent there is big error in my color forecasting, I'm going to find more information on the predicted theme.

Research Results Analysis

Normal people's reaction towards color:

The feeling towards Financial Tsunami: Worried
Color Representing Financial Tsunami: Grey
The feeling towards Global Warming: Anger, Scared, Worried
Color Representing Global Warming: Red
Color Representing the president, Obama: Blue
Will color of clothes affected by your mood: Yes
Color Representing happy, excited, eager: White, Red, Yellow
Color Representing sad, disappointed, upset: Black
Color Representing worried, annoyed: Black

But in Marc Jacobs' eyes, colors applied are different, it should be the opposite as others, as this is his style:

(I predict...)

The feeling towards Financial Tsunami: Happy
Color Representing Financial Tsunami: Red, Yellow, Orange

Since Marc Jacobs will encourage people to use a positive attitude towards Financial Tsunami, for example, go to theme park. And in a theme park, the color should be gorgeous which is Yellow, Orange and Red Light.

The feeling towards Global Warming: Think of the old days when nature is beautiful
Color Representing Global Warming: White, Grey/ Green, Yellow

As Jacobs has all the literal references to past fashions verged on re-creation, rather than the renewal, it won't except 2010, Jacobs might look back to the old days when nature is beautiful.

Color Representing the president, Obama: Blue

Actually, Jacobs loves BLUE, and he always use blue to project a trust, power feeling.

Color Representing happy, excited, eager: Red, Yellow
Color Representing sad, disappointed, upset: Purple, Blue
Color Representing worried, annoyed: Black, Dull color

A new path--- Start to forecast

In order to forecast the color trend in 2010, my path would be like this,:

First, find out the global influential events which may influence the trend.
Second, find out people's feeling towards those events
Third, refers to Marc Jacobs, the color he used when he wants to express those feelings
Finally, predict the color family Jacobs will use in 2010

To achieve the above path, I'm going to do a research by two means, questionaire and personal interview. I believe, these two methods will work!!

Conclusion on comparison

By looking at few years collection of Jacobs, Mcqueen and Galliano, we can find that, three of them are influenced by each other, there are a few points I would like to draw to conclude.

1) Both Jacobs and Mcqueen like to use achromatic color scheme in their every collection.
2) Both Jacobs and Mcqueen may be influenced by Rei Kamakubo or Martin Margiela.
3) Both Jacobs and Galliano like to use bright and sharp color in collections.
4) Jacobs applied color scheme better than that of Galliano and Mcqueen.

Mean Girls Smack Down! Marc Jacobs Vs. John Galliano

NY Times fashion guru Eric Wilson overheard a conversation between fashion rivals Marc Jacobs and John Galliano last week while lunching at the Mercer Hotel that was more like a page from the Mean Girls script than idle chit chat!
Isn't there some unspoken gay rule that you're not supposed to have more than one diva in a room at the same time? It's like having your Madonna and Cher dolls over for a slumber party at Barbie's Dream House. You just don't do it!

Here's what they boys said and what they really meant (sort of) while speaking in gay playground code...

“Hi, John!” Mr. Jacobs exclaimed. “How are you doing?"(IN OTHER WORDS: Oh, it's you.)

“Good, nice to see you,” Mr. Galliano said. “Oh, you’ve gone a little darker, I see.”(IN OTHER WORDS: Still letting your midlife crisis get the best of you, I see. You look like shit.)

“Navy!” Mr. Jacobs said. “Na-vy.” (In my wildest fantasy, MJ punctuated each syllable with a snap!)(IN OTHER WORDS Girl, you look like a cracked-out John Waters with that silly pencil-thin mustache above your lip! When was the last time you looked int he mirror?)

“Oh, that would be a little chicer,” Mr. Galliano said. “Indigo!"(IN OTHER WORDS: Miss Thang, you are so trashy! You couldn't look chic if you tried!)

“Well, if you ever feel like having tea or coffee, I’m sort of bedridden for a few days, so I can’t move far,” Mr. Jacobs said. “I had an operation.”(IN OTHER WORDS: I've got a whole team of plastic surgeons, nutritionists and personal trainers working on making this look hot! You're just jealous that all the fashion magazines actually want to photograph me in the birthday suit that God designed!)

“Oh really?"(IN OTHER WORDS: Oh Really?)

“Sex change."(IN OTHER WORDS: Girl, at least I don't look like a messy daytime drag queen on a hot day! Toodles!)

Marc Jacobs jealous of John Galliano?

Frillr is reporting that super tan Marc Jacobs is jealous of costume king, John Galliano, reportedly trash-mouthing his rival during workouts at the David Barton Gym on West 23rd Street.

According to a Page Six spy, the American designer “Marc and his trainer always talk very loudly - it’s annoying. All he does is complain about Galliano - even after [Galliano's best friend and right-hand man] Stephen Robinson died in April. It was disgusting. He’s so jealous of John.”

What's to be jealous about? They're both creative directors at iconic French fashion houses, they both design ready-to-wear collections under their own brand and both one of them designs Haute Couture.

CATWALKS (REI KAWAKUBO, MARTIN MARGIELA)

REI KAWAKUBO

Tokyo-born Rei Kawakubo is the inspiration behind the internationally recognized Comme des Garçons fashion name. Characterized by white and minimalist interiors, the company's retail outlets were designed by Kawakubo and Japanese architect Takao Kawasaki. Kawakubo's clothing has often been seen to embody notions of anti-fashion, often asymmetrical in appearance, using folds and pleats, exposed stitching, together with the incorporation of ‘found’ materials and the use of contrasting textures and fabrics. Rei Kawakubo's work is both paradox and ideological imperative. Minimal, monochromatic, and modernist. Kawakubo's themes combine the essence of Japanese traditional work-end streetwear, its simplicity of style, fabric, and color, with an admiration for modern architecture, especially the purism of Le Corbusier and Tadao Ando. The tradition of the kimono, with its architectural silhouette off the body and its many-layered complexity of body wrappings, combines with a graphic approach that is flat and abstract.

MARTIN MARGIELA

Martin Margiela is a powerful talent in avant-garde fashion. Formerly an assistant to Jean-Paul Gaultier, the Belgian-born Margiela showed his first collection in 1989 and immediately achieved cult status. He was heralded as fashion's latest bad boy genius and the most notorious exponent of la mode destroy. He dislikes the term "destroy fashion" and has insisted he does not regard it as destructive when he slashes old clothes. On the contrary, he told Elle in April 1991 that it is his way of "bringing them back to life in a different form."

Elements that interaffecting

Apart from colors, there are still something that Mcqueen, Jacobs and Galliano inter-influencing. More examples are as follows:

2009 Marc Jacobs (L)
2009 Christian Dior (R)

Both of Jacobs and Galliano projected a see-through style which adds a little erotics feeling. The main element they really look the same is that, they are both striped see-through and showing underwear of the model. So, I think Jacobs and Galliano must be inter-affecting.

2009 Marc Jacobs (L)
2005 Alexander Mcqueen (R)

Can you find anything special among these two pictures? Mcqueen applied this checks pattern in his collection in 2005, and this year Spring Summer collection of Jacobs also applied checks which is very similar. Besides, Jacobs not only appplied checks with red color, but also achromatic color scheme.

2009 Alexander Mcqueen (L)
2004 Christian Dior (R)

The first reaction I saw Mcqueen's collection this year is that...DIOR 2004 COUTURE!!! I could hardly forget what Galliano has did in that year, it's really gorgeous and amazing!! Can you see both of their hat? They are almost the same!! Who can bet that three of them are not inter-affecting??
